Lawsuit seeks to halt private-prison contracts – West Valley View – Avondale, AZ

Lawsuit seeks to halt private-prison contracts

A lawsuit will be filed to block Arizona from awarding contracts for the construction of five private prisons, an opponent of the plan said Friday.

Details of the lawsuit will be announced Monday at a Phoenix press conference, said Caroline Isaacs, program director for the American Friends Service Committee, a Tucson-based organization.

The Quaker-affiliated group will ask the Superior Court for an order blocking the award of any contracts by the Arizona Department of Corrections pending the outcome of the lawsuit, Isaacs said.

Previously, the agency has reported that announcements on awards would not be made until after Sept. 16.
